NY Route 8 is basically a north-south route that goes through central NY through Utica. When it gets north of Utica, it bends north-east into the sw corner of the Adirondack Park. Then it goes through Poland & Speculator Villages, dips south a bit, then north east again to Gore Mountain Ski Center, Wevertown, Chestertown, Brant Lake to its end in Hague on Lake George. The Hamilton County stretch, from Herkimer County line to Lake Pleasant is a very most sparsely settled, thickly forested region. Needless to say, the road itself is a great one, with tons of straightaways and good road surface for people who like to do > 55 mph. There are only a couple bars, general store and a small motel here, fill up in Poland or Speculator. On the way you pass by pretty little Oxbow Lake, Piseco Lake (at the junction of NY 10) and plain old Sacandaga Lake, not the "GREAT" one in Fulton and Saratoga County. Piseco Lake, in the town of Arietta, is well settled with vacation camps, the only general store and even a small airstrip.
